Public Transportation Works

Public Transportation takes you where you want to go, indicated by recent statistics. Since 1995, public transportation ridership has grown by nearly 22 percent, faster than highway or air travel.

54% of public transportation riders use it to commute to the workplace
15% to travel to schools
9% for shopping
9% for social visits

In 2007, 60.3 billion trips were taken on public transportation, the highest total in 50 years. The first quarter of 2008 shows a 3.3% increase over the same quarter last year and a 2.3% decrease in personal vehicle miles. The public is making their choice about transit.

Why should you make public transportation your choice?

Public Transportation reduces energy consumption...
Nearly 43% of America’s energy resources are used in transportation. 65 billion gallons of gas are used every year on personal vehicles alone. Using public transportation can significantly reduce our country's dependency on the gas pump. For every passenger mile traveled, public transportation uses about half the fuel consumed by cars and a third of that used by SUV’s and light trucks. It’s been calculated that if all Americans used public transportation for just 10% of their daily travel needs, the United States could reduce its dependence on imported oil by more than 40%, nearly the amount imported from Saudi Arabia each year.

Public transportation saves money...
Of the 19% the average household spends on transportation, 94% of that is for buying, maintaining and operating vehicles. This amount continues to grow with the march upward of gas prices.

Public transportation eases congestion...
Each seat filled on public transportation is one less vehicle on the road. A full 60-passenger bus eliminates the equivalent of two lanes of traffic three blocks in length. Without public transportation, traffic delays could increase as much as 32%.

Public Transportation improves air quality...
Use of public transportation produces 95% less carbon monoxide, 92% less volatile organic compounds and nearly 50% less carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide per passenger mile as compared to private vehicles.

Public Transportation is safe...
According to the National Safety Council's "Injury Facts" riding a transit bus is 79 times safer than car travel. Most likely due to experienced operators, larger and sturdier vehicles and passengers being safely elevated above the crash zone in an accident.
